John is a partner in our Corporate Department where he focuses his practice on federal and state regulatory compliance. His practice includes advising and counseling businesses and individuals to navigate the complexities of regulatory oversight, including compliance, impacting legislative action, resolving litigation, and handling government investigations and enforcement actions.

Clients in a variety of industries rely on John’s vast experience with regulatory issues as he counsels them on the development and documentation of service and product offerings, as well as the creation and implementation of compliance management programs. In particular, his areas of focus include consumer financial products and services, data privacy and identity management, and assisting clients to ensure their direct marketing operations are compliant.

As a former regulator himself, John has developed experience handling single and multi-state State Attorney General investigations and litigation. He has worked with State Attorneys General and their organization, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG). He is also an experienced litigator, and routinely represents clients in state and federal courts, as well as before administrative agencies.

In addition, John is regarded as a leading attorney on public disclosure laws, and frequently lectures, writes articles, and advises public bodies, organizations, and attorneys on state and federal public access laws. He serves as general editor on a treatise covering Illinois laws and is consulted on legislative proposals to the Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act while also advising businesses on how to ensure confidential and proprietary information submitted to government agencies will remain protected.

Finally, John’s commitment to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces is displayed by his efforts to establish numerous legal aid clinics assisting veterans obtain disability benefits. Through that work, he developed extensive experience on consumer and employment laws affecting the military and military families. He has extensive knowledge of the Service Members Civil Relief Act and the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.
