Meet Kaiya Barrett
The balancing act of life and career goals will inevitably include points in which you are faced with significant challenges.
What have been the challenges faced in your professional career?
As a woman of color, I’ve had to fight against barriers my entire life. It is an unfortunate reality that throughout my career people have tried to set expectations for me and lower the bar as to how far I can go. These unsolicited opinions did get under my skin and had a significant effect on my overall confidence in myself. While I am my toughest critic, I have matured and found a sense of self-worth in my life and career. Whether it was the decision to shift my career path from broadcasting to marketing or finishing my degree while being a present and attentive mother and wife, I’ve proved a lot of people wrong. It has taken many years and a couple of false starts, but I finally feel content and validated.
What have you learned, what have you taken away from these experiences that helped shape the person you are today?
Between being a mother of four and navigating the ebbs and flows of my career, I have learned that having patience and nurturing relationships are key to success. I have also learned that you should never count yourself out, even when the outlook seems to not be in your favor. I would not be where I am at today without the guidance of mentors, friends, and family. I think the biggest lesson for me is learning to take my own path and not worry about how others may feel about it, because I never expect to be perfect at anything, and there is always room to learn.
