Dinsmore & Shohl’s Jennifer O. Mitchell is presenting at Northern Kentucky University’s (NKU) Security Symposium. Mitchell will be speaking on recent changes to the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, in a speech entitled, “Attorneys and Other Contractors – HIPAA Business Associates in 2014 and Beyond.”

The NKU Security Symposium is an annual event to address IT security challenges and to discuss the latest developments and trends. Under the HIPAA Omnibus Final Rule, there is increased scrutiny on the use, disclosure, and protection of Protected Health Information (PHI) by health care entities and their business associates. The compliance date for the Final Rule was September 23, 2013 and many are just now realizing this law impacts their business. Mitchell will talk about the HIPAA compliance obligations of attorneys and other contractors, including a discussion of best practices as how to avoid missteps when dealing with PHI to provide services to health care clients and customers. She will also discuss the risks associated with HIPAA non-compliance and the importance of performing security risk assessments and taking steps to secure electronic PHI so as to avoid breach notification obligations.

Mitchell is a Partner in the Health Care Practice Group and leads the firm’s HIPAA Privacy and Security practice and initiatives. She provides health care regulatory and compliance guidance, handles complex health care litigation, and has an active investigations practice for state and federal authorities and counsels clients nationwide.

The Security Symposium is October 18, 2013 at the METS Center. The free event runs from 8:15 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
