In a move to enhance the services in its Washington, D.C. office, Dinsmore & Shohl LLP lands high profile Intellectual Property (IP) Partner Brian P. O’Shaughnessy. O’Shaughnessy is well known in the IP world, serving as the elected President and Chair of the Board of the Licensing Executives Society (USA and Canada), Inc. (LES). LES is the world’s foremost professional society for the commercial development of intellectual property into products and services to improve the human condition.

“I’m pleased to welcome a high caliber attorney like Brian to our group. His leadership role in LES and his extensive experience in all areas of intellectual property, and especially licensing, bolsters our strong and growing IP presence in D.C. Brian’s addition further cements our position as among the nation’s most formidable IP practices,” said Joshua A. Lorentz, Dinsmore Intellectual Property Department Chair.

Dinsmore has been strategically adding to its intellectual property group in key locations. Earlier this month, six IP attorneys joined the firm’s Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Diego offices. The IP Department includes more than 80 attorneys (including more than 50 patent attorneys) ranking Dinsmore in the nation’s top 50 firms based on number of patent attorneys, according to rankings compiled by IP Today.

“The legal industry is taking notice of the momentum building at Dinsmore. The knowledge, depth, and experience of this IP group is unparalleled and imposing when combined with the firm’s footprint throughout the innovation and manufacturing centers of America. As I began talking with Josh and firm leaders, there were a lot of synergies between our practices. I’m happy to join the outstanding attorneys at Dinsmore,” said O’Shaughnessy.

Prior to Dinsmore, O’Shaughnessy was a shareholder with RatnerPrestia. He manages global IP portfolios and counsels clients on the use of IP to establish a competitive advantage, including IP licensing, infringement analyses and risk assessment, enforcement of IP rights, and post-allowance proceedings. O’Shaughnessy frequently speaks and writes on IP issues. In 2016, he was called on to testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship to discuss changes to the U.S. Patent System and how they impact small businesses.

“Brian has spent decades building his practice and creating a network here in D.C. With his role in LES, he will enhance Dinsmore’s profile locally and nationally”, said William Sherman, Dinsmore Washington, D.C. Office Managing Partner.

O’Shaughnessy earned his J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law and his M.S. and B.S. from the Department of Chemistry, Rochester Institute of Technology, and now serves on its Board of Trustees and the Board’s Executive Committee. Eighteen attorneys practice in Dinsmore’s Washington, D.C. office.
