Dinsmore Enhances Parental Leave Policy

July 2, 2018News Releases

Dinsmore and Shohl LLP has increased its paid leave offerings for attorneys who are new parents, underscoring a core commitment to work-life balance.

In a benefits expansion that significantly exceeds industry averages, the firm offers birth mothers up to 18 weeks in paid leave, while non-birth and adoptive parents are eligible for up to eight weeks. Attorneys have the option to take this time intermittently over the course of a year.

According to the 2017 Association of Legal Administrators Compensation Survey, the average paid leave time offered to birth mother associates at large firms was 14 weeks, with paternity/parental leave averaging seven weeks. The survey did not report on partner-level benefits, however Dinsmore’s policy extends to all attorneys.

“When we reviewed our parental leave policy, we didn’t want to just keep pace with other law firms, we wanted to be a model for a new and better standard,” said partner and Women’s Initiative Chair Stacey Borowicz.

“By increasing paid time at home for everyone, regardless of gender or child-birth status, Dinsmore is providing added flexibility during a time when parents may need and want it most,” added partner and Diversity Committee Chair Marty Dunn.

“We strive to ensure our firm culture is inclusive and makes work-life balance a priority,” said Managing Partner and Chairman George H. Vincent. “This expansion reflects our commitment to our attorneys, both in the office and out, as well as our interest in attracting and retaining top legal talent.”

The firm’s announcement of expanded parental leave comes on the heels of its recognition in Law360’s 2018 Glass Ceiling Report. Dinsmore was among the top 10 firms of its size in two categories, Best Law Firms for Women and Best Law Firms for Female Partners.

In conjunction with this attorney benefits enhancement, Dinsmore is also increasing paid parental leave offerings for staff firm wide.
