STRONGER Together-Sam Brinker

“We need to keep our eyes and ears open (awareness), and we need to be ready to shift, change, and update our processes and policies (adaptability) depending upon what we see and hear – ideally, of course, in a proactive manner.”

- Sam Brinker, Associate, Columbus, OH

We asked Sam: What do you believe is the formula for addressing LGBTQ+ issues within the legal industry while maintaining a solid, inclusive community that brings all of us together?

I don’t know that we can say we know the formula yet, or frankly, that we ever will, but maybe it’s the metaphor that is causing me to say that. I think creating an equitable environment is more of an art than a math problem – so more of a recipe. One thing about recipes is that they can be really, really good – and yet, by changing one ingredient you might elevate that recipe even more. You aren’t getting rid of the dish or the foundations of it, you’re improving it, making it better. So I can tell you that I think two really important ingredients to creating an equitable environment are adaptability and awareness. We need to keep our eyes and ears open (awareness), and we need to be ready to shift, change, and update our processes and policies (adaptability) depending upon what we see and hear – ideally, of course, in a proactive manner.

To me, the annual celebration of Pride means taking a moment to be glad for how far we have come and, yet, acknowledging how far we still have to go. Pride is both reflective and preparatory for that reason.
