To better serve clients whose intellectual property decisions increasingly intersect with broader business strategy, Sushil Iyer, Ph.D., has joined national law firm Dinsmore & Shohl LLP as a partner in Texas. Dr. Iyer’s move—the first of his career—connects his established patent prosecution practice with Dinsmore’s wide‑ranging service capabilities, expanding the support available to clients.
Dr. Iyer brings more than two decades of experience in domestic and international patent preparation and prosecution across a wide range of technologies, including mechanical and chemical engineering, energy and oil and gas technologies, medical devices, consumer electronics and software.
“Clients increasingly need more than siloed IP advice,” Dr. Iyer said. “They want counsel who understands their business, their growth plans and the full range of legal issues that come with innovation. Dinsmore’s depth across practice areas allows me to better serve clients by integrating patent strategy with company formation, licensing, transactions and long‑term market positioning.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Iyer has focused on patent prosecution and strategic counseling, helping clients develop and manage patent portfolios tailored to their unique business goals. His practice also includes freedom‑to‑operate studies, patent‑related opinions, licensing support, due diligence and reexamination work. He is particularly known for advising emerging companies and innovators as they move from concept to commercialization and will now be better connected to colleagues in corporate, tax and transactional practices to deliver comprehensive legal strategies.
“Sushil is a highly respected IP practitioner who understands not only how to build strong patent portfolios, but how to align those portfolios with broader business objectives,” said Dinsmore IP partner Jim Beyer. “His ability to bridge intellectual property strategy with corporate, transactional and regulatory considerations makes him an outstanding addition to our Texas team and our firm as a whole.”
An immigrant from India, Dr. Iyer earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School and holds advanced degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, as well as a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Madras. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in Texas. His commitment to pro bono service and community engagement strongly aligns with Dinsmore’s long‑standing emphasis on service as a core pillar of the Firm’s culture. He has been actively involved with the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program and looks forward to continuing that work, viewing pro bono service as an important way to give back and use the Firm’s platform to serve the broader community.
