Before entering the legal profession, he earned a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology, where he honed research, writing, and critical analysis skills that now inform his legal work. Hayden later clerked for Judge Greg N. Stivers in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.
