Dinsmore Attorneys Help Community with Flood Prevention Project

A solution designed to prevent neighborhoods in a Central Florida community from frequent flooding has been put into motion with help from the eminent domain and property rights team in Dinsmore’s Orlando office.

For decades, neighbors in the Midway community in Seminole County have suffered through excessive flooding from heavy rains which have flooded yards, homes and streets, and disrupted lives countless times. Leaders in Seminole County recently started construction on a $33 million drainage project to alleviate those concerns.

To get the project off the ground, Seminole County officials needed to acquire land for right-of-way to build the new drainage system. Leaders sought help from Dinsmore attorneys Jay Small, Chip Skambis and Leslie Evans to identify homeowners and acquire needed land.

According to numerous news reports, neighbors have campaigned for a solution, and say they are grateful to see the project come to fruition.

“We are honored that Seminole County leaders selected Dinsmore’s eminent domain group to help with this project,” said partner Jay Small. “It’s a privilege to work on a strategic solution to help a community in need. Chip and Leslie did a tremendous job helping our partners in Seminole County get to this project to the next phase.”

Local news stations in Orlando that have reported on the flooding in the past covered the groundbreaking. WFTV talked to senior citizens in the community who say they have lived with the flooding their entire lives and that “this isn’t just about new pipes and ponds, it’s about dignity, safety, and a promise kept.”
