Derrick Hou focuses his practice on corporate transactional matters, with an emphasis on corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and complex commercial transactions. He advises clients across a broad range of deal sizes, from small and mid-market transactions involving closely held and family-owned businesses to sophisticated, nine-figure acquisitions. Derrick approaches transactions with a strong business mindset, focusing on providing practical, solutions-oriented advice that balances legal precision with broader business goals.
Derrick also has substantial experience representing international companies and investors from Asia and Europe on U.S. market entry and ongoing corporate governance matters, including transactions subject to review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Derrick also brings a strong background in franchising law, complemented by hands-on experience gained during his secondment with a leading quick-service restaurant (QSR) franchisor. In that role, he supported franchise transfers, acquisitions, and a range of compliance and operational initiatives.
Derrick is also deeply committed to pro bono service and works closely with the Pro Bono Partnership of Ohio (PBPO), advising nonprofit organizations on corporate, governance, and transactional matters. In recognition of his dedication and impact, he was named a PBPO Rising Star in 2022. Derrick received his J.D. from Indiana University Maurer School of Law. While in law school, he was the managing editor of Indiana Law Journal.
