New & Lateral Associates

While each individual is ultimately responsible for his or her success, we provide significant encouragement and support.  We believe the best way to learn is through hands-on experience, working closely with more experienced attorneys serving our clients.  We support that work through educational programs and other mentoring that complements attorneys’ substantive responsibilities.

To help first year associates and recent lateral hires build a strong foundation for success, we offer a nine-month advanced orientation program.  The program, designed by the firm’s Professional Development Committee, is designed to help you develop skills in core areas.  The programs offer unique opportunities to interact with members of management, other respected attorneys at the firm and other professionals instrumental throughout your career.

We take mentoring seriously.  We provide our attorneys with formal and informal mentoring programs, along with hosting an annual seminar on mentoring followed by a social gathering to build one-on-one relationships. Attorneys may also consult volunteer mentors to tap into additional resources within the firm.  We encourage our partners to mentor associates as part of our overall training and educational process.

In addition, we provide opportunities for continuing legal education in both substantive and practical aspects of the practice of law, including paying for associates to attend approved seminars to fulfill CLE requirements.

There is no fixed or standard period of time for achieving partnership. Under normal circumstances and the firm's current policy, an associate who joins Dinsmore upon graduation from law school should be in a position to be considered for partnership seven to eight years after graduation. However, each individual's progress is judged independently and according to factors relevant to their own experience. It is not unusual for members of a given class to be admitted to partnership at different times.

Finally, each year the firm conducts a formal evaluation, which provides specific feedback about progress within the firm.
